Periowave Therapy for Gum Disease

Gum Disease Treatment in Mississauga

Gum DiseaseMore people lose their teeth due to periodontal disease than for any other reason. Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is an infection of the gums, ligaments and bone that support your teeth. Gums infected with periodontal disease are toxic reservoirs of disease-causing bacteria. These toxins breed and gradually destroy the very jaw bone that supports your teeth. Bleeding gums can create an opening that allows these bacteria to enter your bloodstream and advance to your heart and other organs. There is mounting evidence that connects periodontal disease to heart infection and stroke.

If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, our hygienist may recommend a period of active therapy - a customized approach designed to arrest this disease. Details including treatment benefits and fees will be explained in consultation. Working with your consent and values, we decide together how best to treat and manage this disease. Whether you wish to retain your own natural teeth or wish to have your teeth replaced with prosthetics as you age, adequate quality jaw bone is still a requirement. The best course of action is to preserve your own natural tissue. We can help!

Periowave

Periowave is the gold standard for the treatment of bacteria found in periodontal pockets. Dr. Šarić is pleased to offer this level of care to her patients who exhibit signs and symptoms of periodontal disease. Periowave is a painless, non-invasive photodisinfection procedure that can significantly improve treatment outcomes when combined with scaling and root planing. Periowave eliminates many of the harmful bacteria and toxins associated with periodontal disease.

How does Periowave work?

Periowave is a non-antibiotic therapy that rapidly destroys gram-negative oral pathogens without pain, heat, or surgery.
Basically, it uses a laser to selectively destroy disease causing bacteria that multiply around the teeth in patients who have periodontal disease. This arrests the progression of the disease and starts the healing process. Patients and dental health care providers note marked improvement in the health of oral tissues. This is great news for patients who want to preserve their natural teeth and dental health!

Periowave is part of a special hygiene therapy plan that follows scaling and root planning and is recommended to patients who would benefit.

Is Periowave safe?

Unlike thermal lasers that cut tissue, Periowave utilizes a cold (non-thermal) diode laser. It does not cause damage to root surfaces, dental materials, or surrounding tissues. Periowave does not exhibit many of the issues commonly associated with antibiotics, such as bacterial resistance, allergic or sensitivity reactions, opportunistic infections, or prolonged doses of medication. Periowave has been used on thousands of patients and is well documented.
