Dental Implants: Surgical Placement
Whether it is the surgical placement of single or multiple implants, or the fabrication of a final implant crown or bridge, our Mississauga dental office can take care of your implant needs.
What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a bio-compatible (tolerated well by your body) titanium fixture that is surgically implanted into the jawbone where you are missing a tooth. The implant will act like the root of your tooth, over which a crown, bridge or denture will be supported. Generally, one implant is placed to restore one missing tooth, or a ratio of 1:1. If all or several teeth are missing, several implants can be used to restore your entire dentition to full function and beautiful esthetics.
Dental implants are the current standard of care for the replacement of missing teeth.
When are Dental Implants Placed?
In some cases, the implant may be placed at the time of tooth extraction (immediate implant), and in other instances the socket may need to be filled with bone graft material and allowed to heal for 4-6 months before proceeding with the implant placement.
Implants can be placed several years after a tooth has been missing, however, the longer you wait there is less potential for successful implant placement as the bone level decreases.
What’s involved?
- Digital imaging helps us determine the quality and amount of existing jawbone
- Study models are taken to aid in planning
- Implants are surgically placed, allowed to heal for 6 months.
- Restorations are custom fabricated and placed over the implants (crown, bridge, or implant supported denture)
Benefits of Dental Implants:
- Independent of adjacent teeth
- Strong and lasting
- Preserve jawbone
- Provide excellent chewing, biting and speaking ability
- Deliver beautiful, natural esthetics – feeling of confidence and youth
- Do not decay, easy to clean
- Suited to any adult – even medically compromised can be considered
Dental Cone Beam CT Scan
If it has been a while since your tooth has been missing,or if you’re considering placement of multiple implants, we will likely refer you to Canaray Radiology Clinic to have a CBCT Scan of your upper or lower jaw. A CBCT scans are dimensionally accurate images that allow measurements of bone architecture to determine whether an implant can be placed effectively, and of what size. Dr. Šarić studies the images and the radiographic report to determine the best implant size to place for each site.
Surgically Guided Implant Placement
When a patient requires multiple implants, or placement of an implant in less than ideal bone conditions, we may require a radiographic guide to aid in the precise orientation of implant placement. This is referred to as surgically guided implant placement and it is something that we are proud to offer in our Mississauga dental office.
Dental Implants: Final Restoration
Typically, dental implants are ready to be restored with a final fixture six months after surgical placement. Single implants are restored with an implant supported crown; two implants separated by a space are restored with an implant supported bridge; three or more implants where there are no natural teeth may be restored by an implant supported bridge or denture.
The final restoration of your implant is typically determine at the start of treatment, before the implant is placed.
